“If
you insist on piercing your ears at least hold
the earrings up with some embroidery thread so
you don’t ruin your earlobes.” (mother to
daughter early 1970’s)
In Taos, New Mexico there is an absolutely
fabulous old ‘trading post’. It has been in the
same family for years and years and over time
the owners have accumulated some of the most
exquisite antique and modern pieces. At a
glance, necklaces, bracelets and earrings take
one back to early times on the Pueblo.
In this wondrous hideaway I found the most
beautiful antique bracelet and earring ‘set’ I
had ever seen. I immediately bought the bracelet
but was concerned the earrings would be too
heavy to wear comfortably, so I left them
behind. Of course, I couldn’t get them out of my
mind and every now and then I would think about
the old store and wonder what had happened to
the beautiful earrings.
Seven years went by before I had a chance to
visit Taos again. I couldn’t wait to check in on
the Trading Post. Once there, I noticed many
beautiful new pieces. Even though unlikely, I
couldn’t help but hope that “my” earrings were
still there. I methodically looked through each
glass case and unbelievably, in the slightly
hidden, dark, dusty corner case there they were!
It was time. I bought them deciding it would be
better to at least admire them in my jewelry
box than to lose them forever.
“If you think you can’t wear them then why don’t
you just wrap some thread around them and hold
them up.”
Through the voice of a dear friend here it was
again. A lot of years had past since the
forgotten days of painstakingly tying embroidery
thread to support my favorite earrings. Needed
often, they had taken time and effort to
construct and had been very difficult to
conceal. However, even though awkward they had actually
worked! Now, I wondered if there couldn’t be a
more simplified and glamorous solution. I wanted
something that would be readily available,
relatively inexpensive, easy to use,
INTERESTING, FUN and DIFFERENT and would
comfortably redistribute the weight of an
earring off the earlobe.
Intrigued with the concept of applying the
‘suspender’ method, I designed the first
prototype. Trials and testing
refined and enhanced the end product and after
following the proper legal steps Lobeez ™
received a US patent in 2007! What you hold in
